Irish wind farms hit a new record high for energy production, producing enough energy to power more than 2 million homes.
At 9:30 local time on December 5th, 4671MW was being produced by wind power installations across the country, beating a previous all-time high set in March last year.
Wind energy is currently Ireland’s largest source of renewable energy and its second largest source of energy overall after natural gas.
There are more than 300 wind farms across the country, in addition to an offshore installation at Arklow Bank, 10km (6.2 mi) off the coast of County Wicklow in the Irish Sea.
While this week’s high was the most energy ever produced by wind power in Ireland, it was not the all-time record in terms of percentage of demand. That level was reached in late February 2025, where production peaked at 103.8% of demand.
When production exceeds demand, Ireland can export energy to the UK via undersea cables. The Celtic Interconnector, allowing for similar energy exchange between Ireland and France, is due to become operational in 2028.
