Supermarket chain launches beers made from food waste

Cans of beer made from lefotver bread

Supermarket chain ALDI will soon start selling a range of beers created from food waste across its UK stores.

The beers, created in collaboration with independent brewery partners, will help ALDI reduce the food waste it creates by utilizing leftover bread as well as fruit deemed too ‘wonky’ to put out on the shelves.

About 44% of the bread that humans produce is wasted, according to Toast Brewing, which has partnered with ALDI to create the Another Road Session IPA using 4,000 loaves of leftover bread.

“This beer embodies our nature-saving mission, meaning everyone can enjoy beer that’s better for the planet,” said Louisa Ziane, Co-Founder at Toast Brewing. “Cheers to a greener, brighter future, one delicious sip at a time!”

The Misfits Summer Fruits Beer, made from strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries otherwise destined for the compost heap, will also be exclusively available from 11 November nationwide.

Up to 25% of fruit and veg produced in the UK is destroyed before even leaving the farm because it ‘doesn’t look right’. ALDI, with the help of Freedom Brewery, is saving nearly a tonne of fruit from going to waste by brewing The Misfits beer.

More than one third of consumers want food and beverage companies to limit their food waste. Cutting global food waste in half by 2030 is a key responsible production and consumption target outlined in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
